I can say with confidence that I love living in places that experience all four seasons, and thankfully that’s been the case throughout my life. I love the changes in weather, the different seasonal foods we crave, getting to wear flip flops and then a few months later getting to bundle up in a jacket and boots. I just love all of it.
Currently, Fall is among us which is bringing the gray skies, colder weather and cravings for hearty soups, crispy apples, roasted squash and anything with cinnamon and ginger.
Last week my husband, daughter and I visited a local orchard in Eindhoven, Netherlands which is currently where we live. We were on the search for fresh orchard apples because there’s just nothing quite like an orchard apple. So crisp and flavorful, and so much different than apples you can get at the grocery store. So different. If you haven’t had an apple picked straight off the tree, you’re surely missing out.
So on an oddly warm Fall day, 78 degrees to be exact, we walked through the orchard and stocked up on some delicious apples! Right away I knew I wanted to make a crumble with these apples because crumbles are one of my favorite Fall desserts. I’m a topping girl, crumble topping that is. That crumbly, sweet, buttery topping is just too good! Don’t get me wrong, I love the apples too, but the topping is something I simply can’t get enough of.
When coming up with this recipe I wanted to do something a little different. I wanted to add some zing and freshness. I decided on fresh ginger, and it ended up being the perfect addition! You’ll just have to try it!

Gluten-Free Ginger Apple Crumble
servings: 9-12
INGREDIENTS
topping
- 1 cup gluten-free oats
- 1 cup almond flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ¼ cup coconut sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla
- ¼ cup organic unsalted butter, cubed
- pinch sea salt
fruit
- 4 medium apples, peeled, cored and sliced
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp fresh ginger, finely grated
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350ºF. In a square baking dish, place sliced apples, cinnamon and fresh grated ginger. Stir around to coat apples evenly. In a medium sized mixing bowl add oats, almond flour, baking powder, coconut sugar and vanilla. Stir mixture. Add cubed butter, and using your hands, massage the butter into the oat/flour mixture until the butter is dispersed throughout. There will still be chunks of butter and that’s okay. Place the batter on top of your apples and spread it out evenly. Bake for 30-35 minutes until topping becomes golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool slightly before serving. Can be served warm, room temperate or refrigerated. Enjoy!
